Public Policy & Advocacy

Public Policy and Advocacy

AJC works to advance its positions at the federal, state and local levels, taking the lead on important issues such as the balance between national security and civil liberties, the separation of church and state, religious liberty, hate crimes, immigration, energy security and civil rights. Regional Office activities include lobby days, private meetings with members of congress, community mobilization on issues of concern, and meeting with high-ranking officials of local governments. The Regional Office also holds brown bag lunches on important public policy and advocacy issues.

RECENT EVENTS

On the evenings of May 3 and 17, 2011, a diverse group of civic leaders assembled in Washington D.C. as a task force under the auspices of AJC’s Bridging America Project which is generously supported by the Ford Foundation.

The Bridging America Project seeks to convene new and experienced voices from sectors that can bring additional access and new political power to policy makers, influence the public debate and promote, support and enable the passage of comprehensive immigration reform. These meetings brought together leaders from business, unions, ethnic communities, faith communities, and public institutions such as education and health care to engage in informed discussions, share experiences and concerns, and work together to advance the conversation and identify solutions for sensible, effective change.

VACOLAO Lobbying Day 2011

On Tuesday, January 18th, an AJC Washington delegation joined forces for the fifth consecutive year with the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations (VACOLAO) for a day of lobbying at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond. The delegation advocated for fair access to higher education regardless of immigration status and against proposed bills that would erode the relationships between immigrant communities and law enforcement.

Melanie Maron Pell, Director of AJC's Washington Regional Office, spoke on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at a press conference organized by the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations (VACOLAO) in response to anti-immigrant legislation moving through the Virginia Legislature. AJC, working with VACOLAO and a broad coalition of immigration advocates, successfully defeated the most egregious anti-immigrant bills.
